(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 02, 2012 ) United Kingdom -- Moving home is often cited as one of the most stressful processes of oneÂ’s life. The substantial emotional strain relocating can put on families notwithstanding; the financial burden of moving house is higher than ever.
A recent study by Lloyds found that moving costs have risen by 69% over a decade, 5% more than house price rises. Estate agent commission, mortgage arrangement fees and stamp duty represent the most substantial costs for those wishing to move home. Stamp duty was waived for first time buyers but will be reintroduced in March owing to the levyÂ’s apparent failure to get more people on the property ladder.
After paying the substantial fees incurred by estate agent charge, mortgage fees and non-negotiable stamp duty there is still the cost of moving itself. Removals costs can be upwards of £600, not unsubstantial given the already rising costs of moving.
Robert Matthams of Shiply, the online transport marketplace with 45,000 courier and removal companies as members, spoke about the current cost of relocating and how customers could reduce their removal costs.
“Moving home is a substantial investment for people, and given all the associated costs and recent economic conditions it is somewhat unsurprising that less people are moving. When they do move, buyers are faced with a number of fees that can be impossible to reduce, such as stamp duty.
One area movers can save money in is removals. When organising a move itÂ’s important that customers accurately quote how much they need moving, if the removal firm finds thereÂ’s more to move than expected, fees can quickly mount up.
Receiving quotes from different removal and man and van services can allow customers to negotiate with their preferred moving service.
It’s also important to choose a reputable moving service, asking for direct referrals or finding reviews and feedback online can help customers check a firm’s trustworthiness. If there aren’t many referrals then it may be more beneficial to choose a more recognised service even if it costs slightly more.”
