(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 04, 2012 ) New Orleans, LA -- Louisiana, a state not known for the wealth of its citizens, is, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, AmericaÂ’s most costly when it comes to insuring private vehicles. The NAIC recently released figures showing that the state was the most expensive for the last two years for which data is available, 2008 and 2009.
The average auto policy with collision, comprehensive and liability coverage was around $1,270 in the Pelican State in 2009.
The NAIC also provided data that provides insight into why Louisiana wears the most-expensive auto insurance crown. The primary cause of the high cost seems to be the sheer number of claims the stateÂ’s citizens make. While the national average is for one out of every 103 policyholders to file a claim a year, in Louisiana that average is one-in-46.
Also, the state has the highest rate of bodily-injury claims in the country. Moreover, it had the third, sixth and sixth highest rates of claims for collision coverage, comprehensive coverage and property damage liability respectively.
