  • CarLoanSouthCarolina.com Takes Stock of Japanese Automakers One Year Later

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 13, 2012 ) Charleston, SC -- So it's one year later following Japan's mind-blowing tragedy of earthquake combined with tsunami, and the Japanese economy seems stronger than ever, at least from the perspective of the auto industry.

It hasn't hurt that U.S. auto sales are red-hot either. Automakers are offering all kinds of special lease and rebate deals just to get customers to come to their lot instead of the guys next door. Not only that, but the used-car market also is so brisk that car values have either stayed flat or even increased slightly over the last few years.

An amazing testimony to the strength and persistence of the Japanese people, companies like Nissan, Toyota, and Honda have overcome factory shutdowns, supply chain breakdowns, and even a nuclear plant meltdown to get back online in record time.

Nissan's Iwaki plant was actually in the Fukushima Prefecture—the same one that the nuclear power plant was in—and was still online again by May of 2011. Predictions were for Toyota to lose up to 2 million vehicles worth of production as a result of the disaster, but reality turned out to be much kinder: only 370,000 vehicles short. Even Honda, which suffered a double whammy with the Japanese quake and tsunami, and then flooding in Thailand that affected suppliers, has been able to return to pre-disaster production levels.

What did they learn from the tragedy? Toyota, for one, has put together plans to be back at normal production levels within two weeks whenever the next big one hits. Don't be surprised to see Honda and Nissan follow up with similar revised contingency plans in the coming months.
