(Transportation-News.com, July 31, 2012 ) Birmingham, AL -- The next Nissan Z-car will be redesigned to attract a larger group of buyers to the Japanese automaker. Nissan design boss Shiro Nakamura says that although development of the new 370Z is still at an “early stage,” he can tell consumers that it will be much lighter and leaner than the current Z-car.
Many auto industry observers believe that Nissan may even downsize the Z-car's 3.7-liter V-6 to a four-cylinder turbocharged engine.
Talking about the plans for the new car, Nakamura said, “The next one has to have a stronger impact. It cannot be any larger. It's at its maximum size now and should go leaner.”
There is no denying that the 370Z is in need of some serious changes. Since its best year of sales in America in 2009, sales of the Z-car has dropped by a staggering 45%. Lackluster fuel economy and high insurance rates may have contributed to this sales lull.
