(Transportation-News.com, August 11, 2012 ) Toronto, Ontario -- General Motors and Ford both had a bad July. Ford's sales for the month were down 4 percent from the same month in 2011, while GM's were down a full 6 percent. Both GM and Ford are blaming slowing sales to rental firms for the decrease.
Outside of the rental company niche, there was some positive news for the American automakers. GM's sales of subcompacts and compacts were up 41 percent from a year ago, while Ford reported that its Fusion experienced its best July ever. Additionally, the Ford Explorer SUV had its strongest July in six years.
Other automakers had a tremendous July. Volkswagen's sales for the month were up 27 percent from the same month in 2011, while Toyota was off this figure by just one point earning a 26 percent jump.
