  • Time is Now for Distracted Driving Legislation in Florida, Says Orlando Car Accident Attorneys

(Transportation-News.com, August 28, 2012 ) ORLANDO, FL -- The Orlando law firm of Wooten, Kimbrough & Normand. P.A. said today that recent developments have underscored the need for local and state officials in Florida to enact anti-distracted driving legislation. A recent Ohio State University from Ohio State University found that trying to do two visual tasks at once, like texting and driving, hurt performance in both tasks. Additionally, the neighboring state of Alabama became the 39th state in the country with a law banning texting and driving on August 1, 2012.

Florida is one of only 11 states that do not ban text messaging for all drivers. Part of the “Blueprint for Ending Distracted Driving” released by U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in June calls for these remaining states to “enact and enforce this critical legislation.” While the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has said the number of fatal crashes has declined every year between 2005 and 2009, the percentage of fatal crashes involving distraction during that same time period increased from 10 percent in 2005 to 16 percent in 2009. In 2010, 18 percent of injury crashes in were reported as distraction-affected crashes.

“We agree with Secretary LaHood’s assessment that distracted driving is an epidemic,” Orlando personal injury attorney Ed Normand said. “Florida should do its part in helping enact and enforce the critical legislation outlined in the ‘Blueprint for Ending Distracted Driving.’”

The Orlando law firm of Wooten, Kimbrough & Normand. P.A. has been representing individuals injured in car and truck accidents since 1966. The personal injury lawyers have more than a century of combined legal experience, and have secured numerous verdicts and settlements in excess of $1 million for clients who have suffered catastrophic injuries or wrongful death cases.
