  • Christian employees still fighting for religious rights now take their case to European Court reports BMFUSA.com

(Transportation-News.com, September 07, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA - Four British Christians who have raised their voice and are moving towards claiming the loss of their jobs due to discrimination against their belief are now planning to move ahead by taking their respective cases to the European Court of Human Rights.

The cases involved an airline worker who was not allowed to wear a cross and a registrar who did not want to marry gay couples. As a result all of these four members lost their respective employment due to their beliefs.

    The cases were as follows:

    • Nadia Eweida, a Pentecostal Christian from Twickenham, South-West London, who was sent home by her employer British Airways in 2006 after refusing to remove a necklace with a cross.
    • Devon-based nurse Shirley Chaplin, who was moved to a desk job by Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Trust Hospital for similar reasons.
    • Gary McFarlane, a Bristol relationship counsellor, who was sacked by Relate after saying on a training course he might have had a conscientious objection to giving sex therapy advice to gay couples.
    • Registrar Lilian Ladele, who was disciplined after she refused to conduct same-sex civil partnership ceremonies in north London.

All four submitted their cases separately but all four of them are together indirectly. The lawyer of Nadia Eweida, James Dingemans, said that the employer of Nadia Eweida have allowed other religious symbols at the work place.

    James Dingemans also added that,

“She was working alongside colleagues who were able to wear religious symbols and attire including the Sikh turban, the Sikh bracelet, the Muslim hijab, and the Jewish skull cap.”

"It was indisputable that wearing the cross visibly did not have any detrimental effect on Miss Eweida's ability to do her job.”

Where as in return the government lawyer by disagreeing to the statement said that the rights of the employees should be limited in order to protect the rights of others.

The National Secular Society is however running their campaigns against religious privilege as they believe that the ruling in the favor or four would weaken the UK equality law on a wider scale.
